Multiplier Reels Basics

Are you looking for a multiplier reel to use the next time you go fishing?

Multiplier reels are a special type of fishing reel, mainly because they are more complicated than others. They have two unique features:

- First, they are the only type of fishing reel used on the top of the rod instead of the bottom;
- and second, they have multiple gears between the handle and the spool, which allows them to rotate and retrieve the line faster than others.

The spool is the part of the fishing reel where the line is held, which can measure up to more than 200 yards, and the handle or the crank is the piece of metal which is rotated in order to turn the spool and retrieve the line.

The other basic parts of the fishing reel are the bail and the drag, which of course, can also be found in multiplier reels. The bail can be opened using the hanlde to let the line go off the spool and can be closed to keep the line in place.

The drag is one of the most complicated parts of the reel, which allows the spool to slip and prevents the line from snapping, which sometimes happens under tremendous pressure or if the reel is used incorrectly. Multiplier reels can have either a level drag or, in the case of newer models, a star drag.

Most multiplier reels also have a levelwind to guide the line across the spool barrel, and brakes to prevent overrun when casting.

Multiplier reels can be used for blue water fishing but are more commonly used for inshore boat fishing, fly fishing, beachcasting – fishing near the shoreline – and baitcasting – fishing with lures, which is often used in bass fishing.

Those that are used for beachcasting and baitcasting are usually wider, lighter and easier to control than those used for boat fishing.
